Breaking the surface of the water, my lungs and shoulders aching, I flailed my upper body forward swimming rapidly back toward to the island. There was still time to catch up with the scientists who were boarding the plane to Brazil, returning to the Asimov Centre to report their findings on the bears; findings that would bring more travellers to the island--and sure death for Cava---master bear of the Amberbowl mines. The orb appeared, a neon green then blue, its reflection strobing against the cool, dark water of the lake that stretched everywhere around me. A low hum began to emanated from it, rising in pitch as it moved closer. Keeping my eyes open, and focused in front of me, I increased the rapidity of my strokes. I hoped I could reach the shore before the orb descended... |

I slowley picked it up with caution thinking it could be a bomb of some sort. Many questions poped into my mind; had the hub left? were the bears doomed for all etearnity? yes, I presume. But right now I was more intrested in the candle. I needed light for 'twas getting dark. Suddenly someting grabed me from behined and hit my back. I felt my bones shatter. . shatter. |

| Finally a small respite from all those voices in my head, like some insane internet chat site I could almost see the images of those personalities both childish or wise but rarely intelligent. All of them sapping at my strength.Now as I looked around, I noticed there was no bar, there were no gay lovers, no honey drinking bears and no aliens, the degenerates had fled back into their scitzophrenic world. All around me the cold, darkening forest seemed to be shrinking as if to consume me. In my hand the warm glow of a flickering green candle. In my mindless stupour it had remained alight, the wax had dribbled down over my hand but I had felt nothing, now the crusted wax pulled at my skin as I flexed my hand. I had to find a place to shelter from the cold before the raging madness returned to debilitate me. |
